This is a souvenir jacket called a tour jacket or a souvenir jacket procured by soldiers who participated in the Vietnam War around 1969-70. It is identical to the jacket known as a VietJan in Japan. It is a beautiful jacket with a relatively large finish.
Tour jackets are so called because they are embroidered with the period of time the soldier was in the war zone, and are not actually intended to be worn in the war zone, but are souvenirs procured to commemorate his time there. They were also worn in the field, but not for combat purposes, but as a fashion item. In South Vietnam at that time, there were many souvenir stores that manufactured and sold these jackets, and it was possible to procure them at bases and in urban areas. Of course, there were cases where soldiers brought home tailor-made jackets as souvenirs, but in many cases, the jackets were sold ready-made and personalized with the soldier's name, period of service, unit, and detailed location.
This jacket is embroidered with the soldier's personal name. Other than that, a unique chain stitch method is used instead of the common hand sewing machine horizontal swing embroidery. While the design is common, it should be noted that in many cases Laos and Cambodia are also embroidered as part of the map, but this one shows only a map of Vietnam, divided into north and south. The place name is QUINHON, where a large U.S. military base was located at the time.
It appears to have been worn several times, and the lining is worn and damaged. The zipper used is a YKK aluminum zipper with some missing teeth on the rails. It is movable, but care should be taken when wearing it. Wax is applied to the zipper to prevent damage, so the wax will fall off in the beginning. It will gradually blend in and prevent breakage. Some of the color of the lining has transferred to the surface due to wetting. This jacket is not a black jacket, but rather the ERDL camouflage poncho liner fabric that was issued to soldiers at the time and is relatively warmer than a black jacket. It has some wear and tear, but the finish is very beautiful and the unique embroidery is excellent workmanship. This jacket is perfect for those looking for a tour jacket.
